What We Do On The Weekend And What We Wear
Men, like women, always think about what they’re going to do with their precious weekend time. Unlike women, though, they don’t put too much thought into what they’re going to wear on the weekend.
If a guy is headed for the beach, he thinks mostly about the function of the clothes he wears and little or none about how he looks. He chooses a swimming suit, a tee shirt and a pair of sandals simply because they are appropriate for the beach. Obviously he’s not going to wear brown boots to the beach. True, he will wear a certain style of trunks, depending on his lifestyle, but he doesn’t give them much thought and just takes the ones that are nearest the top of the clothes in his drawer.
Surfers wear boardshorts. A surfer will probably have three or four pair that he’s collected over a couple of years. They may also be all the same brand that he chose because he identifies with a sponsored pro surfer. His choice of colors, however, is more subliminal and based on whether or not he’s extroverted or introverted. The choice for the day, however, will just be random.
In contrast, a surfer girl will own several new two piece sports swimsuits and also own several bikinis. She wears one while she surfs and very likely goes and changes into a bikini when she gets out of the water. She gives a lot of attention to the suits she’s going to wear on any particular day.
If a girl is going surfing, she won’t need to think about her handbag, but if there are no waves and she’s just going to the beach, she may spend up to half an hour deciding which hobo bag among the many she owns she’ll take with her that day. A guy, on the other hand, just stuffs his wallet in the wax pocket of his boardshorts. He doesn’t have a special pair of trunks for sunbaking or a dozen wallets to choose between.
These principles apply to weekend activities of all descriptions. When a man goes for a hike in the woods, he wears hiking boots. Women’s brown boots for hiking are another thing altogether. Even if she’s going hiking into the wilderness, her boots are an important part of her style.
While these differences between how men and women choose their clothes are common knowledge, they make a deeper statement, as well. How did these differences come to be?
It’s not, as some men like to believe, that women are vain and men are not. Men share that trait equally with women. Are men naturally confident and so don’t need to worry about how they look? No, that’s not it, either. Perhaps the answer lies in our primitive past, when the roles of men and women were dictated by survival. While we think we have evolved, in many ways we remain as we have been since we started walking upright.

Fighting The Current $41.29 In 1926, Gertrude Ederle became the first female to swim the English Channel. Although today she is considered a pioneer in women”s swimming, women were swimming competitively 50 years earlier. This historical book describes the origins of women”s competitive swimming in the United States, beginning in the nineteenth century through Ederle”s astonishing accomplishment. Women and girls faced many obstacles to safe swimming opportunities, including restrictive beliefs about physical abilities, access to safe and clean water, bathing suits that did not allow for movement, and opposition from official sporting organizations. Placed in the context of the current popularity of women”s sports, this book is a testament to how far female athletes have come. |
